A very neat little feature on America's drug czars over at Vanity Fair that has been flying through the interwebs. Written and illustrated by Richard Cortes, it provides a concise history of some of the major players and developments in US War on Drugs with some cool graphic art as well.
This treatment does raise one issue for me though: the tendency for critics of the global drug war to pin everything onto the United States. There is another country whose domestic drug laws were not only an early inspiration for American legislation but who also worked very closely with the United States to prioritize drug prohibition in international governance structures. The answer is.........Canada!
So, while drug warriors want to blame Canada for being lax with regards to illicit drug issues, historically speaking, the problem is actually the reverse.
